Childrens Birthday Parties of Yesterday

Childrens Birthday Parties of Yesterday

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

Whatever happened to the good old birthday party? It seems that in today’s society, childrens birthday parties are costing parents a small fortune.

Do you remember the birthday party where the birthday child would hand out home made invitations to their friends, inviting them to their home for a few hours of birthday fun. Girls wore their best dresses and the boys donned shirts and dress pants and arrived with smiles galore, carrying a birthday gift and looking forward to an afternoon of games with the hope to win a candy bar or two.

Do you remember musical chairs? Pass the Parcel? Sleeping Lions? Musical bumps? Musical statues? All these games cost nothing to arrange, require very little organisation and yet kept us amused for hours as we jumped around and waited for the music to stop, hoping to be the last person left to be rewarded with a candy bar.

The birthday meal consisted of a selection of homemade sandwiches of either Cheese, Peanut Butter or Jam, a bowl of chips or two and dessert was usually Ice Cream.

The birthday cake, made with pride by Mom, sat centre stage as we ate our food and waited to be collected by our parents. Our loot bag was a slice of the birthday cake and a balloon and we all left contented and fulfilled with happy memories.
